With the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship well wrapped up and Gen3 era incoming at pace, we look back at the final three teams to finish ninth, 10th and 11th in Season 8. Here's how Nissan e.dams, NIO 333 and Dragon Penske Autosport rounded off the Gen2 era.
For one of the most successful teams in Formula E history, the three-time championship-winning team struggled through the 2021/22 campaign. Finishing ninth overall, the result was the team's second-lowest placed finish in the series following its 10th place finish last season - a far cry from the three consecutive Teams' titles it won between 2014 and 2017, then under the Renault e.dams name.
Despite the drop down the standings, there were glimmers of hope for the Franco-Japanese team throughout the season. Picking up its first points in Round 3 in Mexico City, Formula E stalwart Sebastian Buemi led his teammate Maximilian Guenther to an eighth and ninth place finish, which yielded six points for the squad.
Following up with another handful of points in Round 5 and 6, it was again Buemi who led the way for the team ahead of a season highlight in Round 11 in New York City, where the Swiss escaped the carnage of the race-ending crash to finish fifth.
In Round 13 in London, it was Guenther's turn to pull in some much-needed points with an eighth place finish, followed by more points from Buemi's sixth place finish the following day. By the time the season finale came around in Seoul, Buemi once again pulled in another precious two points in the final round of the season to round off e.dams' Gen2 era with just 36 points - the team's lowest total in its Formula E history.
Long-time Formula E presence and the team that propelled former champion Nelson Piquet Jr. to the top of the Drivers' standings in 2015, NIO 333 wrapped up a disappointing season in Seoul. With stalwart driver Oliver Turvey as the frontman, the team trusted rookie driver Dan Ticktum to take up duties for the Chinese team for its eighth campaign in the series.
After rumbling along for four races without picking up a point, the team's fortunes turned in Rome as both drivers secured finished in the top ten, with Turvey in seventh leading Ticktum in tenth. "To get six points here and drive from 22nd to seventh was amazing - it feels like a victory to us," said Turvey after the race. "It's so tough to get points now in Formula E as it's such a competitive field. You've got to take your chance when it comes and it means a massive amount to capitalise and I'm just really pleased for the team."
As its only point-scoring race of the season, NIO rounded off its Gen2 era second from last in the Team's championship but it's focus remains firmly on the future. Committed to the Gen3 era, NIO 333 has been busy behind the scenes with a new factory, team and technology, ready to launch an all-new offensive when the Season 9 starts in January 2023.
Despite drafting in a new talent in former Formula 1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi, the DRAGON/PENSKE AUTOSPORT outfit failed to make much of a mark in Season 8, finishing dead last.
Since its best finish of second in the inaugural Formula E season in 2015, the team's fortunes slipped, with three consecutive last place finishes plaguing its name since 2020.
Running without any points for the majority of the season, it was in London that the team made its breakthrough with well-versed Formula E racer Sergio Sette Camara defying the odds to top Free Practice 1, before making it through to the Duels stages in Qualifying, to eventually start Round 13 in fourth. From there, disaster struck and the Brazilian failed to finish the race as his useable energy ran dry. The following day, Sette Camara was able to repeat the feat, rounding off Free Practice 3 in fourth before finally collecting his first and the team's only two points of the season with a ninth place finish in the race.
Now focusing on the Gen3 era and it's new partnership with proven victors DS, the new DS PENSKE squad will look to two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne and reigning champion Stoffel Vandoorne to take it from the bottom to the top of the standings in Season 9.
