Frijns leads Practice 1, Bird close behind in Diriyah

Envision Virgin Racing's Robin Frijns and Sam Bird lead the way in the first session of the 2019/20 season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

For the very first Practice session of the new 2019/20 ABB FIA Formula E Championship, it was Envision Virgin Racing's Robin Frijns who ended the session on top with a time of 1:16.137s. Close behind was Geox Dragon rookie Nico Mueller who came in with a top time of 1:17.401s. In third was Frijns teammate Sam Bird with a time of 1:17.561s.

Reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne came in 17th, over three seconds off the pace in his DS Techeetah. With two back-to-back titles to uphold, the pressure is on for the Frenchman as he looks to secure a third this season.

Within the first five minutes of the session starting, NIO 333's Qinghua Ma clipped his front wing on the out lap, bringing the session to a halt temporarily. With cold track temperatures and a re-surfaced track, drivers struggled for grip in areas with Geox Dragon rookie Brendon Hartley striking the wall with the tail end of his car. With the Red Flag raised, the session restarted with 11 minutes left on the clock.

With one more practice session before Qualifying takes place at 11am (local time), all 24 cars and drivers will be looking to get to grips with the track layout in the historic city of Diriyah.
