Tom Blomqvist jumped in at Jaguar Racing for Rounds 10 and 11 in Season 6 and caught the eye of the NIO 333 Formula E Team's management ahead of Formula E's first campaign as an FIA World Championship. The British-Swedish driver has previous experience with Andretti too, and this time around partners Oliver Turvey in 2020/21 as NIO 333 look to make the most of their new powertrain.
Born and raised in the UK, Blomqvist moved to New Zealand at the age of six. The son of legendary rally driver Stig Blomqvist, his love of motorsports started at the age of three when his father brought home a mini-quad bike. From there, Blomqvist progressed to karting, setting his motorsport career in motion.
From the age of eight, he competed in karting, claiming numerous titles throughout New Zealand up until the end of 2008. In 2009, Blomqvist moved to Sweden to take the next step in his career, where he briefly competed in the Swedish Formula Renault Championship before moving back to continue with the series in the UK in early 2010.
From there, Blomqvist competed in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship, placing second in 2014, before moving onto the highly competitive German DTM series in 2015. Before Pascal Wehrlein, Blomqvist had the honour of being the youngest race winner in the German touring car series, taking his debut win in Oschersleben in 2015.
In recent years, Blomqvist has gained experience in sports car racing, winning the 24 Hours of Spa in 2018 and finishing second in the demanding 12 Hours of Bathurst in 2020.
Blomqvist already has experience in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, as the all-electric series saw his return to single-seater racing in the 2017/18 season. The British-Swedish driver contested six races for MS& AD Andretti, with a best finish of eighth in Marrakesh.
With James Calado absent for the final two rounds of the 2019/20 season, Blomqvist was drafted in to drive the #51 Panasonic Jaguar Racing Gen2 car in Berlin.
Blomqvist immediately made an impression around the Berlin Tempelhof circuit, getting into Super Pole in his first competitive drive in the Jaguar. This performance was enough to grab the attention of the NIO 333 Formula E Team, as Blomqvist joins the Chinese outfit for the 2020/21 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
